WATCH LIVE: Highway 50 traffic

SACRAMENTO - Plan to add an extra hour to your Sacramento commute starting at 12:01 am April 22. That's the word from Caltrans in anticipation of the eastbound Highway 50 closure.

IMPORTANT DATES

The project will still start with several eastbound lanes closing 24 hours a day through May 16, with a break for Memorial Day. The westbound lane work begins May 27 and runs through June 25.

PROJECT DETAILS

According to Caltrans, several eastbound lanes of the highway will be closed for repairs to cracks on a half-mile portion of Hwy. 50 between 18th and 24th streets. Then the project shifts to westbound lane closures.

Work on nearby Pioneer Bridge will also continue during the 50 closure overnight and may impact a few West Sacramento ramps as well per Caltrans.

EXPECTED DELAYS

Caltrans District 3 spokesperson Deanna Shoopman said, "We anticipate at least an hour delay time from Elk Grove, West Sacramento, Mather, and possibly Davis and Natomas due to the back-up from the closure."

RESIDENTIAL STREET DETOURS

Residential communities can expect additional traffic as commuters turn to surface streets to get around the closure.

Shoopman said there are no restrictions for traffic onto surface streets but there will be extra law enforcement including at ramps that are closed.

ANTICIPATED COMPLETION DATE

Caltrans hopes to have the project completed by June 24, according to Shoopman.
