One would think that having not one, but two hugely popular e-sports titles - World of Tanks and World of Warplanes - and another on the way with World of Warships would be enough for a company like Wargaming. Apparently not.
Rolling out on iOS June 26 is it's latest title, World of Tanks Blitz. It's a mobile version of its hugely popular World of Tanks, a team-based multiplayer combat online computer game. Blitz is being advertised as having the same experience as on PC and Xbox 360; after a look at the game, it appears that will be the case.
Visually, the game doesn't look at all like a stripped-down version of the original. Playing on a Wargaming-supplied iPad, animations and gameplay flowed smoothly, and textures looked detailed enough as to appease most players.
Controls, too, come across pretty well. Since tablets don't come with keyboards, tanks are instead controlled using an on-screen analog stick. Overall, controls are a mix of a virtual gamepad and a standard tablet touch interface. It didn't take long to get used to the control scheme, but for those who aren't sold on it there is good news. The control scheme can be customized to some degree, which should help things a bit.
One noticeable way in which Blitz is inferior to its PC sibling is that the tech tree isn't quite as deep. While this could be to save on data for the mobile edition of World of Tanks, it could also be because the game is simply new. It would not come as a surprise if each nation's tank and tech trees deepen as Blitz becomes more tenured.
When World of Tanks Blitz launches next week, it will boast armors from three different nations - the United States, Soviet Union and Germany - with a grand total of 96 tanks between them. There will also be an initial selection of eight maps for seven-on-seven battles and plenty of options for crew members, tank tech and so on.
A free-to-play game, World of Tanks Blitz won't cost anything to download from the Apple App Store but will offer players the option to make in-game purchases.
An Android version currently in the works.
