SACRAMENTO - Writer and Stockton native Maxine Hong Kingston received the 2013 National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in a ceremony Monday at the White House.
Kingston was born in 1940 to parents who were Chinese immigrants living in Stockton. She is known for her books detailing the experiences of Chinese immigrants in the United States, and her other honors include a 1997 National Humanities Medal that was awarded to her by President Bill Clinton.
Kingston is a professor Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley.
The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. According to the White House website, Obama told the recipients that their "accomplishments enrich our lives and reveal something about ourselves and our country."
