SACRAMENTO - Police are looking for at least one suspect in a shooting at a child's birthday party over the weekend that killed one man, and injured six other people, including a young child. The incident happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday at Peregrine Park in North Natomas.
Neighbors said the area is considered a quiet, safe, and relatively affluent neighborhood, and some were surprised to see such violence in their area.
According to police, several suspects approached the park on foot and then fired.
A nearby resident said he heard 25-30 shots fired. And he believed that someone at the party returned fire.
In all, seven people were shot, including a 7-year-old-girl. The child and several others shot were expected to recover.
"Most of them were quite lucky. There was two leg wounds, one foot wound," said Voyle Rutledge, a nurse who ran to the scene to help.
The one person killed, was identified by friends and family as Jacoby James, a young father.
Rutledge performed CPR on James after the shooting, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
Police said they were looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang related.
Police asked for help from witnesses and from anyone who
might have surveillance video or further information about the shooting.
