Passersby tried to rescue the driver of a car that overturned into a Modesto canal Friday morning.

Modesto Regional Fire Authority Battalion Chief Cecil Ridge said it was unclear why the driver of the car lost control as he was traveling westbound on Briggsmore Avenue, just west of College Avenue, about 6:30 a.m. The car left the roadway and overturned, coming to a stop half-submerged in the water.

The Good Samaritans had been able to pull the driver out of the car as fire crews and EMTs arrived, Ridge said. The driver was transported to Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ridge wanted to thank those who tried to save the victim.
