SACRAMENTO – A runner missing in the Sierra since Sunday was found alive, the Placer County Sheriff's Office reported.

The sheriff's office tweeted at 12:54 p.m.: "We are happy to report that missing runner Robert Root was just found alive!"

Root, from Modesto, became separated from his running group on the Western States Trail Sunday morning. Search and rescue teams had been looking for him since. He was located in the Michigan Bar area.

Sheriff's office spokesperson Dena Erwin said Root told them he was trying to catch up with a group running ahead of him when he took a wrong turn and became lost. He found himself on a cliff overlooking the American River. He stayed in some bushes for warmth Sunday night. When he tried to find his way out Monday, he ended up back where he had spent the night.

After a second night in the same spot, Tuesday morning he decided to walk up and west to the El Dorado Bridge and that's when he saw searchers looking for him.

As he was being loaded into an ambulance to be medically checked, he thanked the rescuers and told the assemblage of reporters he was "grateful" to be found.
