SACRAMENTO - Where are more than 10 percent of the city's computers? That's a key question in a new audit of Sacramento's Information Technology department.
The study found what could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars of unaccounted equipment.
The City of Sacramento runs on more than 4,000 computers, and it's the IT Department's responsibility to keep track of them all.
City auditors went hunting, and 12 percent of their sample's computers are missing. While they can't say if any of them are stolen, the city now clearly knows it needs a better way to keep track of them all.
When city officials started getting whistle-blower tips on bad inventory management, they went looking for abuse. That opened the door to an extensive audit that found potentially hundreds of missing computers. The computers may still be there, but the IT department can't account for them.
"If you can't track what you have and when you procured it and what it's current status is, then things can go missing," City Auditor Jorge Oseuera said.
The audit found about 40 percent of IT records had errors, which is 5 percent of the industry standard. The department's head said she's adopting the audit's recommendations to prevent possible theft and wasteful spending.
"We've put into place some policies and procedures now to ensure that the entire life cycle is accounted for and that there is complete records," Sacramento Chief Information Officer Maria MacGunigal said.
This audit may be just the beginning. Auditors are looking next at how the Sacramento Fire Department manages its extensive inventory. Those results are expected later this summer.
